The animal head brooch was worn during the Viking Age almost exclusively on the Swedish island of Gotland as part of a woman's costume and was widespread there from the 8th to the 11th century.
The animal head brooches worn in pairs were used to fasten the straps of the Viking apron dress. In addition, another animal head brooch in a different style or a box brooch was often placed in the middle and worn to close the cloak.
The Gothic animal head brooch has a separate base and measures 6 x 4 x 3 cm - it is thus somewhat smaller than the historical model.
The animal head brooch is elaborately handcrafted from high-quality bronze or in genuine silver-plated and carefully patinated, which highlights the decorative motifs very well.
