Replica of an Avar belt buckle with hinge.
This replica of a Merovingian belt buckle with the depiction of palmettes was made after an Avar model dating to the 7th - 8th century.
Belt sets were very common in the early Middle Ages during the Merovingian period among the Avar horsemen in the Kaparten Basin and were an important expression of rank, status and clan within Avar society. Belt fittings are therefore found very frequently in Avar finds from this period.
The Avar buckle measures 4.5 x 2.6 cm.
The belt buckle is suitable for belts with a width of 1.5 cm.
The Avar belt buckle is made of high-quality bronze and is also available in genuine silver-plated.
Fastening: There are four pins on the back of the Avar belt buckle. To fasten the decorative rivets, simply insert them through the corresponding holes in the leather. It is best to use pliers to bend the tips inwards a little. If you then tap the pins flat with a hammer, the tip will sink into the leather and the Avar buckle will be stable and flat on the belt.
