Rectangular horn slab made of black horn.
The horn slab is made of real water buffalo horn and is ideal as a fitting or intermediate layer for a knife handle. The horn disc measures approx. 40 x 30 mm and is available in three thicknesses - 3 mm, 4 mm and 5 mm.
Since the horn slab is not polished to a shine but is rough all around, it adheres excellently to the other handle materials when glued in the knife handle.
Horn discs were already used by the knives of the Germanic tribes as a finish between the blade and the handle. In the Viking city of Haithabu, too, a large number of such horn discs were found on knife handles.
In the High Middle Ages, so-called disc handles also became popular, where the knife handle was decoratively fitted with a smaller or larger number of discs of different materials at different intervals, or even just with horn discs.
