These solid leather scales in rectangular shape are made of a strong grain leather from vegetable tanning, which offers excellent protection.The leather scales made from vegetable tanned grain leather are 3 - 3.5 mm thick and are simply perfect for making a solid scale armour with optimum protection.
On one of the narrow sides, the scales are provided with two holes with which they can be sewn or riveted onto an appropriate backing material made of leather or fabric. The individual scales should overlap each other.
The dimensions are 8.5 x 4.5 cm, the hole size is 3 mm.
The leather scales are available in black or brown. The individual scales in the pack of 100 vary slightly in the shade of the basic colour - this results in an attractive colour effect and each scale armour becomes unique!
The pack contains 50 scales of grain leather of one colour each.
Leather scales have been used to make scale armour since ancient times by the Persians, Greeks and Romans and were still in use by the Byzantines and Vikings until the late Middle Ages. In addition to armour scales made of leather, those made of bronze, iron and even bone or horn were also used.
