Avar belt fitting with gryphon from Vrap.
This detailed replica of a Merovingian belt fitting with the motif of a griffin is based on a historical find from Vrap in present-day Albania.Link to the original fitting...
Bronze and silver belt fittings were very common among the Avars in the Early Middle Ages and were important for rank, status and clan within Avar society - belt fittings are therefore found very frequently in Avar finds from the Merovingian period.
The Avar gryphon fitting from Vrap measures 3.5 x 2.5 cm.
The fitting is therefore suitable for belts with a width of 2.5 - 3 cm.
The belt fitting from Vrap is made of high-quality bronze, also available in real silver-plated.
Fastening: There are four pins on the back of the Avar belt fitting. To fasten the decorative rivets, simply insert them through the corresponding holes in the leather. It is best to use pliers to bend the tips inwards a little. If you then tap the pins flat with a hammer, the tip will sink into the leather and the Avar belt fitting will be stable and flat on the belt.
