The expressive bangle you can buy here is crafted after an early medieval find from the Merovingian period.In the early Middle Ages, such a simple shaped bangle was often worn only on the left wrist, but sometimes also in pairs, and identified the wearer as part of the socially higher-ranking Merovingian society.
Under the Migration Period, in Late Antiquity and especially in the Early Middle Ages, the bangle was an important status symbol, while in the Merovingian period the bangle was worn especially by wealthy Alemannic and Frankish women as a typical accessory.
However, Merovingian men also wore such a bangle, as evidenced by finds among Alemanni, Thuringians, Franks and even the equestrian people of the Avars.
Depending on the region, the bracelets could be smooth and plain or decorated with several cross grooves or cross decorations.
While silver bracelets are usually only found in richly decorated women's graves of the late 5th and early 6th centuries, bronze bracelets are found much more often and until the 7th century also in men's graves. Arm rings made of iron are also documented.
However, a solid gold arm ring was also found in the tomb of the Frankish king Childerich I from the end of the 5th century in Tournai, Belgium.
