Viking age necklace with crucifix from Birka.
The 4 mm thick Viking necklace made of braided leather has expressive end caps in the form of filigree decorated animal heads holding a Viking cross pendant in their mouths.The Viking cross pendant was made after a find from the excavations in Birka / Sweden and dates back to the 9th - 10th century.
The so-called Birka crucifix is a small marvel of goldsmith's art from the 10th century that was found in 1879 during excavations in the Swedish Viking town of Birka in grave 660.
The original pendant was made of silver with an elaborate granulation technique, which was typical for jewellery at the time of the Vikings. Our replica, on the other hand, is completely cast in one piece, whereby the filigree depiction is magnificently expressed.
Instead of the pendant supplied, another piece of jewellery can also be attached to the necklace, provided that its eyelet measures more than 3 mm. All you have to do is bend open the omega hook that connects the two mouths a little, and then you can attach any pendant you like.
You can buy the braided necklace in timeless matt black or in a beautiful antique brown with parts made of high quality pewter.
The pendant measures 3.5 x 2.5 cm. The Viking necklace is made of 4 mm thick leather cord and comes with a 65 cm cord.
The necklace thus reaches approximately to the chest and is placed over the head as a whole.
