Viking beard bead in jelling style.
This cylindrical Viking beard bead or hair bead was inspired by historical models in the so-called jelling style of the Viking Age and is decorated with a distinctive dragon creature.The jelling style originated in the second half of the 10th century at the Danish royal court in Jelling (Jutland) and is dominated by ribbon-shaped and S-shaped animal figures. It was created through the increased contact between the Scandinavian and Anglo-Saxon worlds during the Viking Age, in whose art slender animal figures were already used, whereby the griffin animal, which had been dominant in the Viking art styles until then, was replaced as the main motif and replaced by ribbon-shaped animal figures depicted in profile.
