Viking mythology includes the serpent Níðhöggr, which means "the one who strikes with hatred". This serpent lived at the foot of the world ash tree Yggdrasil and gnawed at its roots.
However, the serpent Níðhöggr also gnawed on the corpses of manslayers, oath breakers and adulterers, which were considered the worst of all crimes by the Vikings, which is why they ended up on Náströnd (corpse beach), the realm of the dead of the goddess Hel, instead of reaching Valhalla.
