The spiral is in fact one of the oldest Celtic motifs at all and as a symbol is more than 2000 years old. The spiral was considered by the Celts as a symbol of the sun, as it were, also for growth and the cosmic energy itself. A right-handed spiral represented the waning winter sun, whereas the left-handed spiral represented the great summer sun, and the double spiral the equinox.
The triple spiral is also known as the triskele, and in pre-Christian times it was considered the symbol of the triple goddess - virgin, mother, old woman - and symbolized the succession of generations in life and the eternal change of nature.
