The second of the great Viking styles is called Borre style, after the grave find of Borre in Vestfold / Norway, which dates back to the 9th to 10th century. The Borre style represents the second phase of the Nordic griffin style and was especially widespread in Eastern Scandinavia.
The Borre style is particularly characterized by mirror-symmetrical motifs, such as circles and squares, which are often integrated into a woven band ornamentation, e.g. in ring chains and pretzel knots, whereby often also different mythical creatures are connected with the geometrical knotting.
