The rune stone from Moesgaard dates from the end of the Viking Age and is inscribed with runes on two sides; the third side of the rune stone is almost completely taken up by the image of the mask.
It is believed that the mask was originally made of leather and was used in sacred acts in the Viking Age to protect travellers on their journeys.
