The shape of this chain distributor suggests Baltic-Finnish influences, as openwork distributor plates in exactly the same design are known from several eastern Viking Age sites.

Chain distributors were attached directly under the bowl brooches in the Viking Age and connected them with several chains suspended one above the other, which could reach considerable lengths.

From about 700 to 1000 AD, cup brooches with chain distributors were an elementary part of women's costumes in Northern Europe and are therefore often found in women's graves from the Viking Age.
Often, several chains were worn between the bowl brooches worn in a pair, which were attached to wide distribution plates or bar chain distributors. This custom was particularly widespread in Finland and the Baltic States, but also on Gotland.
