The raven has been a recurring element in human myths and legends since time immemorial. It was also sacred to the North Germanic tribes. The ravens Hugin and Munin were the faithful companions of the Norse god Odin, who sent them out into the world every morning and brought him new news every evening

Odin was the god of wisdom and also bears the epithet Hrafnáss "raven god". Hugin stands for thought, reasoning and wisdom, while Munin stands for memory, recollection and omniscience.

The early Celts also believed that the raven was a messenger of the Otherworld. Oracles were read from its flight and divinations were made from its appearance in dreams. The Celtic god of light Lugh, patron of magicians, warriors and poets and creator of the arts, was also always accompanied by a raven.
