Short description
Raven amulet from the Scandinavian Vendel era inspired by a model from Gotland / Sweden. Zamak in silver or bronze color. 5 x 3 cm.
Productdetails...

Raven amulet based on a find from the Vendel period.

This beautiful amulet from the Vendel period probably depicts one of the ravens of the Germanic god Odin / Wotan.

The raven amulet from the Vendel period is modelled on fittings found on the Swedish island of Gotland and dates from around 600 AD. The style of the amulet belongs to the Vendel period, which immediately preceded the Viking Age.

Depictions of birds are common in this period and were widespread throughout the Germanic area up to the Viking Age.
The original fittings can be admired today in the Statens Historiska Museum in Stockholm.

Dimensions of the raven amulet: 5 x 3 cm.

The Vendel Age raven amulet is made of zinc alloy and is available in brass or silver colour.

A 1 metre long black cotton cord for the amulet is included.

The raven has appeared in human myths and fairy tales since time immemorial and was even sacred to the Germanic tribes. For example, the ravens Hugin and Munin were the loyal companions of the Norse god Odin.

He sent them out into the world every morning to bring him new news in the evening - after all, Odin was the god of wisdom. Hugin stands for thought, thinking and wisdom, while Mugin stands for memory, remembrance and omniscience.

The Celts also regarded the raven as a messenger from the other world, as oracles were read from its flight and prophecies were made from its appearance in dreams. The Celtic god of light Lugh, patron god of magicians, warriors and poets and creator of the arts, was also always accompanied by a raven.
