The historicalmodel for this Viking crucifix comes from the Viking Age find at Sanda on the Swedish island of Gotland.Similar crucifixes with the depiction of Jesus are found very often in the finds from the end of the Viking Age and were worn especially by the eastern Vikings, the Rus.
Cross pendants like this one with the depiction of Jesus in a blessing gesture were both a profession of faith and a protective amulet.
