The Ukrainian Tryzup is actually the small national emblem of Ukraine, which came into force with the Constitution of Ukraine adopted in 1996, and goes back to a design by the artist V. Krycevskyj in 1918.
However, its historical roots go much further, as the first historical evidence dates back to the Rus period and was found especially on coins and rulers' emblems from around 1000 AD onwards, which showed a stylized trident.
The original meaning of the Tryzup is still unclear today and there are many legends, but it is assumed that the Ukrainian trident is of Tatar origin and represents a stylized falcon. In a modern reading, the word WOLJA / ВОЛЯ for Ukrainian freedom is also thought to be recognised in the Trysub.
