The amulet was made after a historical pilgrim's badge that was probably acquired by a pilgrim in the late Middle Ages as a souvenir of a visit to Mont Saint Michel in France. Like the original, this replica can alternatively be sewn onto the garment at its openings as a pilgrim's badge.
The original badge dates from 1400 to 1500 AD and is now part of the holdings of the British Museum in London.
