The Order of the Dragon, in Latin Societas Draconistarum, was a noble order founded in 1408 and was also called the Order of the Defeated Dragon or the Order of the Dragon Knights. The most famous member of the Order of the Dragon is Vlad III Drăculea, the historical model for the famous novel character Count Dracula.

Originally, the Order of the Dragon had as its symbol the ouroboros, the so-called self-eater, a circular-shaped dragon devouring its own tail, but over time the symbol of the Order of the Dragon changed to a dragon with its tail coiled around its neck.

Knights of the Order of the Dragon wore the dragon symbol directly on their clothing in the form of a neck or shoulder ornament, and pledged to defend Christianity against the Turks. The patron saints of the Order of the Dragon were the two dragon slayers St. George and Margaret of Antioch.
