Tribals were originally Indian tribal symbols in the form of tattoos, which had a ritual or socio-cultural meaning. The tribals on the tattoos of the Maoris of New Zealand, for example, represent the strength and courage of a warrior or were intended to protect against "evil".
The tribal warrior received his first tribal when he reached manhood, and another after a great deed, such as killing a large animal or an enemy, or some other service to the tribe.
