Germanic Berlock Pendant.

Here you can buy a historical pendant modelled on Germanic berlocks from the Roman Imperial period, which dates from 100 - 200 AD.

Berlocks were worn as jewellery around the neck by higher-ranking Germanic women during the Roman Imperial period and were probably a status symbol of the married woman or mother, as berlocks are found almost exclusively in women's burials.

The berlock was usually made of gold, more rarely of silver, and is therefore often called a gold berlock. Berlock pendants were usually made hollow and covered with filigree granulation decoration and gold threads.

Dimensions 2.5 x 1.2 cm.

Gold berlocks were a characteristic jewellery of Germanic women's costumes during the Roman imperial period from the 1st to 2nd century AD and often decorated with filigree beads and fine wires in granulation technique - berlocks are among the most outstanding Germanic jewellery of the older Roman imperial period.

The production of berlocks required great technical sophistication, but this seems to have been mastered by a large number of smaller workshops in the Germanic region. Gold bells are found in Saxony, Bohemia, Poland and southern Scandinavia, where they were found in abundance.
