Medieval pewter button in the shape of a flower.

This pretty replica of a medieval pewter button in the shape of a blossom is based on a French model from the 14th century and has an eyelet on the back.

Buttons in the shape of blossoms are found several times in medieval finds and were characteristic of the garments of the late Middle Ages, when long rows of buttons came into fashion for the decorative closure of clothing.

With the solidly cast-on eyelet on the underside, the medieval button can be attached to the garment with a few stitches.

The size of the pewter button is 1.2 x 0.6 cm. The eyelet is 2 mm wide.

The medieval pewter button was hardly used before the middle of the 13th century. It entered fashion rather late and was conveyed by traditional trade routes from the Orient across the Mediterranean to the north of Europe.

In the Middle Ages, the pewter button often had the shape of a ball, but pewter buttons in the shape of acorns or flowers were also common. But unlike today, a pewter button in the Middle Ages was usually fastened directly to the hem of the garment and closed with an eyelet on the opposite side.
