Tip for a Rus Viking cap from Birka.

The small cap tip of the Viking Age is made in close imitation of an original historical find from the Viking town of Birka.

Such a tip was typical for the caps of the Swedish Vikings who lived and traded along the great rivers in the west of Russia, the then Gardarike, and were called Rus, after the (presumably) Norman term for oarsmen or a rowing team.

The Viking cap tip is modelled on Hungarian traditional costume components, such as those found on belt and bag fittings from the Viking Age. The original was probably made in Kiev.

The historical models for this lace were found in two richly furnished graves from the 10th century (graves 581 and 644) in the Viking city of Birka, which was located in the middle of Sweden's Lake Mälaren and was a major trading centre for the Rus Vikings from the east.

The cap lace measures: 4.5 x 2.4 cm and has four holes for sewing the lace to the end of the cap with a few stitches.

Made of cast zinc alloy in the colours bronze and silver. In contrast to this replica, the original Birka cap was made of pure silver and elaborately filigreed.
