Short description
Short Viking sax blade of damascus steel after a model from Gotland for crafting an authentic sax by your own. Total 30 x 3 cm. Cutting edge 19.5 cm.
Productdetails...

Blade for a short sax of the Viking Age from Gotland.

With this elegant blade for a short sax, you can easily make a dreamlike Viking sax of your own design with just a little skill.

The sax blade was made after the discovery of a blade from the village of Hellvi on Gotland / Sweden. Also, from the Viking settlement of Birka and from the Baltic States a number of such blade types in different lengths are known.

The sax was not only popular with the Vikings, but also before that with the Anglo-Saxons, Franks and other Germanic tribes. The sax was not only useful as a "machete" in everyday life, but also as an affordable and handy weapon that could be used well in the shield wall.

Blades made of Damascus steel were already held in high esteem in the early Middle Ages because such blades are characterised by both hardness and elasticity. A sax blade made of genuine Damascus steel is therefore both durable and unbreakable.

The Gotland long knife blade has a strong, 6 mm wide spine and a pronounced hollow grind. It is forged from two different steels in wild Damascus. When both types of steel are forged together into one blade, the result is a particularly beautiful and characterful flamed damascus finish.

On the one hand, carbon steel AISI 1095 is used, a classic among knife steels, which as an unalloyed and rust-resistant tool steel is very tough and easy to grind, with a solid service life.

On the other hand, AISI 4340 is used, a nickel-containing steel with good properties that creates beautiful bright sections and noble contrasts when used in Damascus steel.
We recommend keeping the sax blade dry and treating it occasionally with a little oil to prevent possible flash rust.

Dimensions of the short Viking sax blade:
Total length 30 cm
Cutting edge 19.5 cm
Blade back 6 mm
Blade height 3 cm
Tang 10.5 cm
