The carbon steel Viking sax blade is modelled on Swedish long knives from the Viking settlement of Birka in Lake Mälaren, where several of these sax blade types have been found.The Sax was very common among the Vikings, Anglo-Saxons, Franks and other Germanic tribes because the Sax was not only best suited for everyday use as a "machete", but was also a cheap and handy weapon that could be used well in the shield wall.
Unlike the continental Sax of the Franks, which had a rather stocky shape, and the insular Saxes from the Anglo-Saxon region, which often had bowie-knife-like blades, the Scandinavian Sax, especially in eastern Sweden, were rather long and narrow.
The hardness of the Birka sax blade is 58 to 60 Rockwell.
