Productdetails...

Replica of a Viking sword chape in the Borre style.

This beautiful replica of a chape for a Viking-era sword is made after a historical model from the Swedish village of Valleberga and dates to the end of the 10th century.

That Viking sword chape shows a bird motif and, according to Paulsen's typology, is called the Valleberga type and was widespread throughout the Viking area.

Finds of this type of sword chape are known from Hafurbjarnarstodum / Iceland, Hareskovby / Denmark, Valleberga / Sweden, Trondhein / Norway and Gnezdovo / Ukraine and other Viking settlements.

Link to Viking Age placebands...

The dimensions of the sword chape are 8 x 4.4 cm.
The width of the inlet for the sword scabbard is 4 x 1.4 cm.

The Viking sword chape replica is made of solid cast bronze and also available real silver-plated.

For fastening, the sword chape is put on the scabbard and best fixed with a so-called gap-filling glue on the side. In addition, there are small openings in the band so that it can also be secured with thin pins or nails.

Since the time of the Celts and the Romans, the sword chape has been made of bronze or brass, but also of iron or, more rarely, of precious metal. The sword chape is always placed at the end of the leather or wooden scabbard to protect the tip. The metal tip also had a decorative function. The counterpart to the ligature at the opening of the scabbard is called a mouth plate and is intended to prevent the scabbard from being damaged when the sharp blade is inserted.
