Crafting kit for a Viking sax from Birka.
This kit for a Viking sax was inspired by the sax finds from Birka and makes it easy to make a unique Viking sax to your own taste. The Viking sax crafting kit includes a carbon steel sax blade, building instructions and various materials for the knife handle and leather for making a sax scabbard.
The Viking sax blade is made of 1095 high carbon steel, a classic among knife steels. This steel is quite tough and grinds very well, with a solid service life. 1095 is an unalloyed, not rust-resistant tool steel.
With a hardness of 54 - 56 HRC Rockwell and a carbon content of 0.90 to 1.03 % with a manganese content of 0.3 to 0.5 % this Viking sax blade is indeed hard to break down and a reliable "workhorse" - hard, flexible, unbreakable!
We recommend keeping the Birka sax blade dry and treating it occasionally with a little oil to prevent possible flash rust.
