Short description
Medieval spectacle frame made of wood after a find from Bergen Op-Zoom / Netherlands, dating from the 14th to 15th century.
Productdetails...

Medieval spectacle frame made from wood.

Here, you can buy a medieval wooden spectacle frame that was made after a historical find from the late Middle Ages.

The historical model for this spectacle frame is a late medieval find from Bergen Op-Zoom in the Netherlands, which dates from the 14th to 15th century.

Link to the original medieval spectacles...

The medieval spectacle frame is made of 2 parts riveted together, which means that the spectacles can be opened to any position and are therefore suitable for any head.

Unlike today's spectacles, these were not worn with temples in the Middle Ages, but were either simply clamped onto the nose as a so-called pince-nez or stretched behind the ears with straps attached to the spectacle frame. There are two small holes on either side of the frame for this purpose.

The medieval glasses are supplied without lenses. The frames are slit on the underside so that they can be pulled apart a few millimetres to accommodate a lens. A small plaited elastic serves as a fastener. Alternatively, a piece of thread can also be used, as was customary in the Middle Ages.

Each leg of the medieval spectacles measures 8.5 cm and is suitable for lenses with a diameter of 3.8 cm.

When inserting the lenses, the frame of the spectacle frame should only be pulled apart cautiously and with little force in order to avoid damage.
