Like the historical model from London, the medieval thread reel has ring decorations all around and is pleasant to grip. The ends are tapered so that they can accommodate shorter pieces of thread.

There are some finds of thread spools from the Middle Ages and the Renaissance that show that these objects were quite common in medieval households. Typical were rural thread reels, some of which could also have subdivisions for several threads, whereas short and compact spools of thread were less common.
