Viking weights in the shape of a cuboctahedron are first attested for the Viking Age in the second half of the 9th century and spread in rapid succession throughout the Baltic region.
One side of the scales was filled with so-called hack silver or silver coins, and the other side was balanced with the corresponding bronze weights until the pointer was centred.
