Short description

Productdetails...

Horse-shaped Viking brooch from Birka - left model.

Here you can buy an authentic reproduction of a horse-shaped Viking brooch from an excavation in the Viking city of Birka.

The horse-shaped brooch was found with another mirrored brooch as a pair together with other Viking Age grave goods in the grave Bj 854 and is indeed an exceptional find.

Instead of the usual Viking oval brooches, these two horse-shaped brooches were found on the left and right below the shoulders, where they obviously had the function to hold the Viking woman's dress.

Link to the original horse brooches…

You can buy the horse brooch in high-quality bronze or genuine silver-plated.
Alternatively, you can also order it in 925 sterling silver (please note delivery time).
Alloy...

Instead of garnets, the eye of the horse is inlaid with red glass enamel.

There is a sturdy pin on the back of the horse-shaped brooch, which also suits well for stronger woollen fabrics.

The dimensions are 5.4 x 3.2 cm

Both horse-shaped brooches were found in the 1870s by the archaeologist Hjalmar Stolpe in the grave Bj 854 in Birka (Adelsö, Upland, Sweden) and were made of partially gilded silver with eyes made of inlaid garnets.

The horse brooches were most likely made in Scandinavia and were buried in a 10th century Viking tomb, although the horses themselves probably date from the 6th or 7th century.

The style and design suggest that the horses were originally made as fittings, but were later fitted with a pin device and worn as brooches. They may have been in the possession of the family for several generations.
