Productdetails...

Replica of a polyhedron brooch of the Viking Age.

Here you can buy a detailed replica of a so-called polyhedron ring brooch that was made after a historical model from Finland.

This type of ring brooch is called a polyhedron brooch or a brooch with cubooctahedral or faceted end knobs because of the polygonal, bevelled ends at the ends of the brooch.

This type of brooch was widespread during the Viking Age, mainly in the Baltic region between the 9th and 11th centuries. Horseshoe brooches of this type are known from various sites, e.g. Papinsaari / Finland, Vindelgransele / Sweden, Haithabu / Germany and Lake Ladoga / Russia.

Dimensions of the polyhedron brooch: 6 x 5.5 cm.

You can buy his Viking jewellery in high-quality bronze or in genuine silver-plated.
Alternatively, also available in 925 sterling silver (Please note the delivery time).

Such a Viking ring brooch was usually used to close the man's cape on the right shoulder.

It is certain that the shape of this type of brooch was based on the weights of Viking chariots, which were identically shaped and decorated. Presumably, this design in the form of cradle weights was originally intended as an expression of the wearer's identification with his profession as a merchant or member of a merchant's guild.

However, brooches with cubooctahedral ends were very common and about 40% of all ring brooches found between 800 and 1000 AD belong to this type. Thus, the polyhedron brooch was probably a generally known and freely usable form of design rather than being reserved for a closed merchant guild.
