Tongue-shaped brooch of the Viking Age.

This tongue-shaped brooch from the Viking period was made after a historical find dating back to the 9th century.

The Viking fibula shows a typical representation in the so-called Borre style, which was very popular in Scandinavia in the 9th century. The original is now in the British Museum in London.

On the back of the brooch there is a sturdy bronze needle, which is also suitable for heavy fabrics. The eyelet at the end of the tongue-shaped brooch can be used to attach, for example, a string of beads or a chain with a toilet set.

The tongue-shaped brooch is made of high-quality bronze and is also available in genuine silver-plated.

The dimensions are 8.2 x 2.7 cm

In addition to the characteristic bowl-shaped tortoise brooches, flat tongue brooches were also known in the Viking Age. Like the former, they were worn as a pair below the shoulders and held the skirt there.

The Viking tongue brooch are most likely to be traced back to precious book fittings which the Vikings had stolen from Christian monasteries during their plundering expeditions and reworked into jewellery for their wives. In the course of the Viking Age, tongue-shaped fibulae in the Nordic style were also made.
