Viking tongue-brooch replica from Norway.

This tongue-brooch from the Viking Age was made after a historical find from Gryta in Norway.

The Viking tongue-brooch is made of high-quality bronze and also available in genuine silver-plated. 7 x 5 cm.

The Viking brooch shows an unusual depiction of an S-shaped animal in so-called jelling style, which turns around itself and bites into its ribbon-shaped body. The original is now in the Bergen University Museum.

A sturdy bronze needle is attached to the back of the Viking tongue-brooch, which is also suitable for heavy fabrics. At the eyelet at the lower end of the fibula you can attach pearl pendants and necklaces or cords with toilet cutlery.

In addition to the typical, bowl-shaped tortoise brooches of the Vikings, flat, tongue-shaped brooches were also known, which were as well worn in pairs on the shoulders and held the skirt.

The tongue-brooches of the Viking Age probably go back to book fittings that the Vikings had stolen from Christian monasteries and reworked into jewellery for their women who had stayed at home. In the course of the Viking Age, tongue-brooches were also created in the Nordic style.
