Unlike most annular brooches, which are usually very small and were only used to close the neckline, this medieval brooch is much larger, so that even coarser fabrics can be closed with that brooch.
The medieval brooch is therefore not intended as a fastener for the neckline of a shirt, but lends itself to closing a cloak or doublet.
