Forged brooches were very common in the Middle Ages and especially in the Viking Age between 790 and 1060 and were used to fasten garments and cloaks, but iron brooches were also used in Roman times.
The pin of the iron brooch is inserted through the fabric of the cloak on the right shoulder and locked in place with the round part so that the brooch can no longer detach from the garment.
