Short description

Productdetails...

Replica of a bow brooch of the Hahnheim type.

A detailed replica of a zoomorphic bow brooch of the Hahnheim type after a find from Kent / England from the 6th - 7th century.

Five-button brooches with a radial head plate like this one were mainly worn by West Germanic women during the Early Middle Ages and were very common. Such brooches are found mainly in the Rhineland, but were also widespread across northern France to southern England.

The bow brooches were worn as a pair near the waist to close the woman's tunic. In the early Middle Ages, brooches were part of the so-called four brooch costume, which was characteristic of the garments worn by Merovingian women.

In the four brooch costume, two larger bow brooches were worn in the lower part of the garment and two smaller S-fibulas in the upper part.

The original of this five-button brooch was originally made with carnelian inlays and is now in the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford / England. We offer this brooch replica made of bronze and silver plated with inlays of red glass flux.

On the back of the five-button brooch there is a solid needle, which also closes stronger fabrics securely.

The dimensions of the Hahnheim brooch are 6 x 3.3 cm.
