Short description
Medieval alms pouch of supple leather after historical models of the high Middle Ages. In five different colours. xx cm.
Productdetails...

Medieval alms pouch of supple leather.

Here you can buy a so-called alms pouch that was modelled on medieval girdle bags from the High Middle Ages.

As is typical for the alms bags of the High Middle Ages, this medieval pouch bag also has a trapezoidal shape and makes this alms bag a special accessory for medieval garb.

The pouch of the medieval alms bag is made of supple cowhide leather, while the lid and loops are made of sturdy nubuck upper leather.

The alms bag is closed with a small leather pull disc and is available in five colours.

The alms bag measures xxx cm (incl. belt loop).
The pouch measures 19 x 21 cm.

The medieval alms pouch was a pouch-like bag that was worn on the belt in the High Gothic period and was clearly visible to everyone. As a clothing accessory, it had an important significance for social life in the Middle Ages, as the term alms pouch reflects the Christian tradition of charity.

The alms bag has been documented since the 12th century AD, with written sources dating back to the beginning of the 13th century AD. The alms bag was often a small pouch with a rectangular or trapezoidal shape.

In the Middle Ages, the alms pouch was used to store coins and other everyday items, which is why the bag dangling freely from the belt often became a victim of thieves. In view of this, alms bags were increasingly worn concealed underclothing from the 14th century onwards.
