Figurative representations of women are common as pendants in Viking Age finds. They were probably worn as a protective amulet in this period, since in Nordic mythology, Valkyrie women were considered to be those who, after battle, chose the souls of fallen warriors (Einherijr) to escort them to the halls of Valhalla.
