Thor's Hammer was the magical war hammer of the god Thor, with which he fought the enemies of the Norse gods, such as the giants and the Midgard Serpent. Thor's hammer was therefore also called Mjölnir by the Vikings, which means crusher or lightning.
In the 9th and 10th centuries, Thor's hammer was very popular among the Vikings as a piece of jewellery, as it enabled them to distinguish themselves as Old Believers from the emerging Christianity.
