Several examples of this ROMA brooch have been found, all bearing an openwork monogram with the Latin letters R, M and A, with the O being represented by the circular base of the brooch. Such a fibula has even been found on the Isle of Wight in England.

The term Roma refers both to the city and to its divine personification, the Dea Roma, if you read RMA from left to right. Read from right to left, the same letters also form the monogram for "Amor", the Latin name for Cupid, the god of love, as the palindrome Roma-Amor was widely known and favoured in antiquity.
