he Swedish town of Sigtuna on Lake Mälaren is considered, along with Lund, to be the oldest town in Sweden still existing today. Sigtuna was founded around 980 by King Erik Segersäll. He thus replaced Birka as the most important trading settlement up to then.
The king may have wanted to establish a purely Christian town on the Mälaren, which was to reorganise the balance of power in the kingdom and bring it to an end with the pagan Birka.
