Replica of a Viking-Padlock from Birka.

Here you can buy a hand-forged Viking padlock that was faithfully crafted according to an original find from the excavations of the Viking town of Birka on the Swedish isle Björkö in lake Mälaren.

The original padlock from Bika is dated to the 8th or 9th century and was found during excavations on the island of Björkö in Lake Mälaren, Sweden. Padlocks of this type probably go back to Chinese models.

A lock was simply indispensable in the Viking Age in order to be able to keep valuables and utensils safely in your personal wooden box or a large chest.

Our replica of the Birka Viking lock is hand forged. The sophisticated locking mechanism inside the padlock consists of three pins with attached springs that lock the padlock.

With the key provided with three holes, these springs are compressed when inserted and pulled upwards. Then the entire upper part of the Viking padlock, including the bolt, can be opened.

The Viking lock from Birka suits perfectly for closing medieval chests and Viking caskets.

The Birka padlock measures 5 x 6 x 12 cm.
